Features of Tungsten Carbide Unground Rods

  • Ultra-High Hardness

Room-temperature hardness reaches HRA 88–93, approaching the level of diamonds, which gives end products exceptional wear resistance.

  • Superior Strength and Toughness

The composition and content of the binder phase can be regulated to achieve a balance between high flexural strength (over 3000 MPa) and excellent fracture toughness. This meets the diverse demands of applications ranging from precision machining to heavy-duty impact.

  • High Density and Low Porosity

Advanced sintering techniques such as hot isostatic pressing are used to achieve over 99.9% density, a uniform structure and zero internal defects, ensuring consistent performance.

  • Excellent Thermal Stability and Shemical Inertness

It maintains high hardness at elevated temperatures (superior red hardness) and offers outstanding resistance to acid and alkali corrosion.

  • Comprehensive Grade Range

A complete series is offered, ranging from low-cobalt (high hardness and wear resistance) to high-cobalt (high toughness and impact resistance) grades (e.g. YG6, YG8 and YG15, as well as custom grades), which can be matched precisely to diverse operating conditions.

  • Diverse specifications

Standard round bar diameters range from 3 mm to 50 mm, with customisable lengths. Square bars, flat bars and near-net-shape preforms are also available.

  • Selectable Microstructure

Bars with ultra-fine, medium or coarse tungsten carbide grain sizes can be provided to optimise hardness, toughness or wear resistance as required.

Typial Applications

  • Cutter and Tunnelling Teeth: These are core tooth blanks for coal cutter teeth, tunnelling machine cutter disc teeth and milling machine cutting tools. Once cut and welded, these bars come into direct contact with coal and rock, achieving efficient crushing thanks to their exceptional hardness and toughness.
  • Oil/Gas Drill Bits: Used as blank material for cutting and gauge teeth in drill bits operating under deep-well conditions involving high pressure, high temperature and severe wear.
  • Geological Exploration and Percussion Drills: Produces ball-tooth and cone-tooth blanks for exploration and down-the-hole drills used in mining, hydrological engineering and infrastructure pile holes.
  • Top-hammer Drill Bits: Used for drill bit teeth in open-pit mining and rock excavation.
  • PCB Micro-drills and Milling Cutters: Micro-drills with a diameter of less than 0.1 mm for drilling printed circuit boards. These bars require extremely high uniformity and rigidity, and are critical foundational tools for the electronics industry.

FAQs

A1: We offer a complete range of standard and customised grades.

Common grades: These cover the full YG (tungsten-cobalt) series, including YG6 (high hardness finishing), YG8 (general wear resistance), YG10 (good toughness) and YG15 (heavy-duty impact resistance). · Ultrafine-grain, coarse-grain and non-standard alloy grades are also available upon request.

Standard specifications: Round bar diameters typically range from 3.0 mm to 50.0 mm, with customisable lengths (e.g. 300 mm, 330 mm, 500 mm or longer). Square bars, flat bars and custom profiles in near-net shapes according to drawings are also available.

A2: Core quality metrics include:

1. Physical properties: – Density (should approach the theoretical value of ≥14.9 g/cm³)

– Hardness (HRA) (e.g. YG8 typically ranges from 89.0–90.5 HRA)

2. Mechanical properties: Tensile strength (TRS) measures toughness; the typical value for YG8 is ≥2000 MPa.

3. Microstructure: The metallographic structure must be uniform and free of pores, cobalt pools and other defects. The grain size must meet the specifications for the grade.

4. Dimensional accuracy: straightness, diameter tolerance and surface finish.

We provide factory inspection reports containing the above data for each batch.

A3: The selection depends on balancing hardness (wear resistance) and toughness (impact resistance) for your end-use application.

· YG6: approx. 6% cobalt content, highest hardness and excellent wear resistance. It is suitable for low-impact applications such as precision cutting, PCB micro-drilling and wear-resistant components.

· YG8: approx. 8% cobalt content, offering an optimal balance of hardness and toughness. The most versatile grade, suitable for general machining tools, geological drill bits and medium-impact conditions.

· YG15: Approximately 15% cobalt content, offering superior toughness and impact resistance, but relatively lower hardness. It is suitable for heavy-duty cutting teeth, impact drills, stamping dies and other applications involving severe impact loads.
